Description:
SYMBICORT is a medicated inhaler used to prevent bronchospasm in patients suffering from asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This medication works as an asthma controller, made from a combination of two drugs - budesonide and formoterol. Pulmicort (budesonide) is a steroid that improves asthma symptoms by decreasing irritation and inflammation, while foradil (formoterol) is a long-acting bronchodilator that relieves bronchoconstriction.

Directions:
SYMBICORT should be used exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all patient instructions for safe use. Do not take in excess amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor.

Generally, doctors will prescribe to take 2 puffs of SYMBICORT, twice per day, approximately 12 hours apart. If asthma symptoms do not improve, consult your doctor as they will likely adjust or change your medication. Do not change your dosage or medication schedule without advice from your doctor. Take SYMBICORT daily for optimal results.

Cautions:
To make sure you can safely use SYMBICORT, tell your doctor if you have any of these conditions:
  • any allergies to budesonide or other chemicals contained in SYMBICORT
  • any heart disease or conditions
  • high blood pressure
  • seizure disorders
  • infections (including herpes infection of the eyes)
  • diabetes
  • tuberculosis
  • thyroid disorder or an electrolyte imbalance (such as low potassium levels in your blood)
SYMBICORT is not recommended for use in pregnant women and those breastfeeding because it can harm a baby. Consult your doctor for more information. Long-term use of these steroids may lead osteoporosis, especially if you smoke, lack physical activity, do not get enough vitamin D or calcium in your diet, or if you have a family history of osteoporosis.

SYMBICORT should not be used to treat an asthma attack that has already begun as it may increase the risk of asthma-related death. Talk with your doctor about your individual risks and benefits.
