Description:
Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), a member of the pea family, has been used since ancient times as food and medicine. Herbal manufacturers remove glycyrrhizin, producing deglycyrrhizinated licorice, or DGL. Studies have found DGL to be as effective as common drugs in treating stomach pain.
Cautions:
Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, and those with liver or kidney disease is not established for DGL. Anyone taking medication for high blood pressure, or Digitalis, should check with their physician about DGL.
