Uses: (1) Treatment or prevention of type A or B
influenza in people 13 or older (for oseltamivir) or people 7
or older (for zanamivir).
Other (unlabeled) generally accepted uses: (1) oseltamivir
reduced complications (secondary) from the flu in one study.
How These Drugs Work: These medicines preferentially
inhibit a critical chemical called neuramidase in type A or B
flu (influenza) viruses. When neuramidase is blocked, newly
formed virus is not released from infected cells (because
sialic acid cleavage is inhibited from cell surface
glycoconjugates) and the flu virus is kept from spreading
across the respiratory tract (mucous lining). Oseltamivir is
the ester prodrug of GS 4071.
