Uses: (1) Treats symptomatic benign prostatic
hyperplasia (BPH)-peak decrease in prostate size has occurred
after 6 months of therapy; (2) approved to decrease risk of
urine retention and need for prostate surgery in BPH; (3) used
as Propecia brand (l mg) to retain or regrow hair.
Other (unlabeled) generally accepted uses: Reduces excessive
hair in women (hirsutism).
How This Drug Works: Blocks an enzyme (5-alpha
reductase) that decreases change of testosterone to
dihydrotestosterone (in liver); this causes the prostate to
shrink. Symptoms such as urgency and trouble urinating
improve. Inhibiting 5-alpha reductase also leads to hair
growth.
